The Snedden Hall & Gallop University Scholarship turns 21 this year! Since we first awarded the scholarships in 1999, we’ve helped almost 40 aspiring lawyers by providing financial assistance during the first three years of their university studies. Many scholarship winners have also been able to join our team, even if only for a short time.
To commemorate this significant birthday, we’re going through the archives to give you an update on where some of those young stars are now.
In this profile we find out more about Gemma Butler, who is a valued member of our team.

Gemma Butler

Where is she now?

Gemma is the senior law clerk at Snedden Hall & Gallop, Canberra.

How did she get there?

After doing her schooling at Canberra Girls Grammar School, Gemma completed her degree in development studies at the Australian National University in 2018 and will soon complete her law degree. While studying, however, she has also managed to undertake a number of roles, including State Director for Oaktree, a youth-run development agency.
Apart from a short stint as legal assistant with Clayton Utz, Gemma has been with Snedden Hall & Gallop since 2014, initially as a paralegal and currently as a senior law clerk.

What does Gemma say about the scholarship?

‘The scholarship program has provided me with valuable exposure and stepping stone into the legal industry as through the scholarship I was able to gain employment with SHG. During my time here, the firm has provided me with invaluable training and mentoring which has assisted me both professionally and throughout my studies.
Working at SHG has exposed me to a range of practice areas, and I have been able to work on matters from personal injury litigation, to a sale of business, to drafting of wills. It has allowed me to put my theoretical legal understanding into practice and see first-hand how the law interacts with individuals. I am very grateful to Snedden Hall & Gallop for selecting me as a scholarship winner.’
