On 7 December 2024, the Department of Home Affairs replaced the Temporary Skills Shortage Visa (TSS) with the Skills in Demand Visa (SID). Like its predecessor, the SID is an employer-sponsored visa requiring nomination by an approved employer. However, the SID introduces significant improvements to address current labour market demands, offering greater flexibility for skilled workers and streamlined pathways to permanent residency.

Key Features of the SID:

  • Reduced Work Experience Requirement: Applicants need only 12 months of full-time equivalent work in the last five years.
  • Visa Duration: Holders can remain in Australia for up to four years.
  • Sponsor Flexibility: Workers can change sponsors and have up to 180 days to find a new employer.
  • Permanent Residency Pathway: Employment with any sponsor now counts toward the two-year requirement for the subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa.

SID Streams:

Specialist Skills Stream

This stream allocates 3,000 spots annually for highly skilled professionals earning at least AU$135,000 per year. It targets critical industries such as cybersecurity and software engineering and offers streamlined processing within seven days. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Nomination by an approved employer.
  • Health and character compliance.
  • Employment in a non-trade occupation (excluding trades, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers).

Core Skills Stream

Designed for most skilled migrants, this stream requires an annual salary of at least AU$73,150 and applies to occupations listed on the updated Core Skills Occupation List (published 3 December 2024)

Labour Agreement Stream

This stream remains unchanged, allowing migrants to work under terms outlined in Labour Agreements between employers and the government.
